Online Music Lessons

Englert Music Studio is maintaining a consistent schedule for online music lessons with the use of the Zoom Video Conferencing platform. While our focus and preference is in-person, in-studio private music lessons, we do have the capabilities and structure in place to conduct virtual, online music lessons. I assure you that regardless of in-studio or online music lessons, that my students are continuing to learn and grow their love of music. Our online music lessons for piano, clarinet, flute, saxophone, oboe and bassoon are interactive and while I prefer to have teacher and student sitting side-by-side in person, we effectively accomplish our music lesson tasks online and make positive progress each week.

I have established standard guidelines for the online music lessons, including setting up your laptop, webcam and phone as needed and be logged on through Zoom and ready to go at the start of your lesson time. Each student should have a pencil, their CD player and their practice chart printed out, updated and readily accessible during the lesson.

We maintain our “enthusiasm” for the virtual music lesson. We all work together and we all are moving forward, still in contact and making musical progress!

To learn more about how Englert Music Studio connects with our students for online music lessons, watch the brief overview video below.

In Studio Policies

As we emerge from the difficult time with COVID-19, Englert Music Studio wants to reassure everyone that our students and their families health is a significant priority. We have always had firm hand-washing policies in place for our piano students, as well as students taking woodwind instrument lessons. The same practices include using tissues, using hand sanitizer and limiting the touching of faces will apply as they always have. We will clean the piano keys and instruments after every lesson.

Surgical masks are available to wear and I will gladly wear a mask during a lesson upon request. Englert Music is not a public studio and therefore there are a very low number of individuals are entering the studio on any given day. We do plan to continue teaching and holding recitals within the guidelines outlined by the CDC and you are welcome to call with any concerns and I will gladly discuss them with you.

Sincerely,
Carolyn Englert

Structure for Online Teaching

Have your metronome, pencil, staff book, flashcards (if applicable), all music, music stand (if applicable), horns ready or be seated at the piano ready to go.
Your laptop (or tablet or phone) should be positioned so I can see your hands & embouchure, or hands on the piano. With piano, positioned slightly behind the student off to the right of where you are seated. With woodwinds, from the front is best. I do not need to see music, as I have that all in front of me at the studio and I am ready to go.

The more prepared the student is to start, the better use we can make of lesson time. I will send a text to let you know when I am ready to connect, and please be ready at your scheduled time. For Zoom, all you need is my ID number, which I will provide. I have also used Google Duo & Google Hangouts with students, if this is necessary instead.

I am taking notes during the lesson and will follow up with a practice chart via email. If I have sent an email practice chart that week, please make sure to have it printed out! The order on the chart does not necessarily mean this is the order the lesson will progress in, so be prepared. When practicing, start with a different piece or theory page or flashcards, so you are rotating around what you are working on. Do not just start with the first piece listed. CHANGE IT UP!! Variety is the spice of life!!

With some younger students, it is helpful if the parent can be available, especially my latest beginners in piano. Otherwise, parents do not need to be involved, except to help set up the laptop, tablet or phone. I find virtual, online music lessons work best using a laptop, as the sound is better & there is a larger viewing range, but we’ll make it work regardless!!

I am thankful we can all connect this way. While it requires more energy & preparation than an in-person one on one, it also encourages more self-actualization from students! This is a very good thing! I believe it has proven successful and I am willing to adapt and I appreciate those of you that I have connected with!! I will continue to work hard and do the best teaching possible!
